In 2021 I pointed out in my first book, United States of Fear: How America Fell Victim to a Mass Delusional Psychosis, that American women were becoming markedly unwell psychologically. It was obvious to me in my clinical practice, where I observed a growing increase in anxiety disorders specifically in young women, which was reflected in a nationwide Pew Research study that showed American women were reporting levels of anxiety and depression never seen before.

It has only gotten worse: As of 2023, nearly 50% of young American adult women report high levels of psychological distress. And I believe I know why.
